History of the Festival of Giving
Festival of Giving began in 1950 as the Doll Festival in Wichita. Girl Scout troops would dress dolls, and place them on display at the festival. Following the festival the dolls were distributed to local and overseas agencies for children who might not receive Christmas presents.
Currently, more than 500 Girl Scout troops participate each year in the Festival of Giving (the second Saturday in December at Century II in Wichita). These troops provide needed items for approximately 15 social service organizations throughout Butler, Cowley, Harvey, Sedgwick, and Sumner counties. Girls have the opportunity to make items such as fleece blankets or purchase new items through troop funds.
These items can range from diapers to coffee makers based on the needs of the organization. The items are brought to the event location for display. As part of the festival, groups may sponsor an activity booth, and food items and teddy bears are collected for distribution. At the end of the event the agencies pick up their donated items and distribute them to those in need.
There were various activities such as C-Arrow petting farm, caroling, a special visit from Santa, a Service Unit banner painting project, and more than ten of our community partners were in attendance to share what they have to offer Kansas Girl Scouts.
Just a few highlights:
- More than 1,700 people in attendance in just 2 ½ hours.
- Donations collected filled over two large full tubs for the Toys for Tots program.
- Donations collected filled over three storage bins for the Kansas Food Bank.
- Three service units that had 100% of their troops participate and 3 of every 4 Girl Scouts in the Wichita Metro participated.

New! Festival of Giving 2012 – Hutchinson
Reno County Girl Scout troops granted the wishes of two local nonprofit agencies at a Festival of Giving donation drive, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 2, at the Girl Scout Cabin (located north of Talbot lake) on the Kansas State Fair Grounds in Hutchinson. There were crafts, baked goods and Christmas treats made by Girl Scouts and volunteers.
The Festival of Giving was a Girl Scout service project providing an opportunity for Girl Scouts from Reno County to say “thank you” to the community for their continued support. The Girl Scouts donated needed items collected by local troops to First Call for Help’s Teen Christmas Program as well as the Sexual Assault/Domestic Violence Center, Inc. of Reno County.
