A brief history
Festival of Giving began in 1950 as the Doll Festival in Wichita. Girl Scout troops would dress dolls and place them on display at the festival. Following the festival, the dolls were distributed to local and overseas agencies for children who might not receive Christmas presents.
Carrying on the tradition
This unique community service event, which occurs annually in south-central Kansas, continues today and is designed to give Girl Scouts an opportunity to make a difference in their community.
Currently, more than 500 Girl Scout troops participate each year in the Festival of Giving season, providing needed items for approximately 15 social service organizations throughout Butler, Cowley, Harvey, Sedgwick and Sumner counties.
The Festival of Giving Donation Day will be Nov. 22, 2014, and service units will be donating items to the Kansas Humane Society, The Arc of Sedgwick County, and Starkey Inc. All Cadette, Senior and Ambassador Girl Scouts are welcome to put their leadership skills to use by volunteering as a Green Teen on Nov. 22 and helping unload donated items.
Any troop leaders and girl members who participate in Festival of Giving will receive a free admission ticket to the Victorian Christmas on Dec. 5, 2014, at Old Cowtown Museum, where they can attend the Festival of Giving Celebration. Prior to entering into Victorian Christmas, troops can spend their Cookie Credits at the Shop-On-the-Go, learn about participating agencies, and donate a toy to Toys 4 Tots. Do you want to attend this event as a family? Old Cowtown Museum will be offering a discounted admission to Girl Scout families who want to attend with their Scout. Can’t make it to the celebration? Old Cowtown Museum will be honoring the free admission ticket on any night of Victorian Christmas!
