Scholarships for summer camp are being processed through the Financial Assistance program. Applications should be received no less than two weeks prior to the camp registration deadline (4 weeks prior to camp). The fastest way to submit an application is electronically via our website:  http://kansasgirlscouts.org/financial-assistance-application/. The council will make the camp registration on behalf of the girl once the scholarship has been approved; for girls with a balance due, the reservation will be made once arrangements for payment of the balance due are complete.

What does volunteering for Girl Scouts mean to you?     

My name is Leslie Seeley. I am an Emporia native and a Girl Scout volunteer. I was a Girl Scout as a child and now I serve the young women of Emporia as a Girl Scout volunteer. I work for ESB Financial, a locally-owned bank, as a branch manager. I graduated from Emporia State University in 2002 with a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish and a Bachelor of Arts in German. My husband, Samuel, and I have 2 children. Sophia is 11 years old and a 5th grader at Walnut School. I have been her troop leader since she started Kindergarten in 2007. Calvin is 7 years old and a 1st grader at Walnut School. He is an active Cub Scout and lover of sports.

Why should I be a volunteer? When you volunteer in an organization like Girl Scouts, you are playing an active role in shaping the young women leaders of tomorrow. Our girls need strong, independent, self-sufficient women to care for them, build them up, give them confidence, and provide them with opportunities that will help them to learn and grow. Most of us would not be where we are today without the influence of the volunteers who helped us as children and young adults. Now, as adults we get the opportunity to not only give of ourselves to those who need us, but to work along others who share our passion for creating a better future and to learn from each other. We should never stop learning and never stop giving.

Share your story about volunteering for Girl Scouts!

Watco Transportation took more than 130 Girl Scouts, their families, railroad fans, and staff for a short journey to west Wichita on May 16 in a passenger train car.  Attendees did a scavenger hunt, learned about careers in railroading, and enjoyed a “hobo” style box dinner. Operation Lifesaver was also on-board to educate passengers about train safety.

Female staff members of Watco Transportation believe in sharing the many facets of railroading such as how it supports commerce, careers in the industry, as well as supporting our nation’s transportation. All important lessons for the next generation of girls.

Attendees boarded around 5:30 p.m. at Walker and Osage for an hour long ride. They arrived back at Watco Transportation, 1825 W. Harry, for a mini behind-the-scenes tour of the dispatch center.  Participants also received an elite Watco Transportation patch for attending.

The park locations were picked by the City of Wichita in accordance with their need due to tree die off from the drought. These Girl Scouts hope the trees will flourish and provide much needed shade and scenery for these parks as they grow.

Girl Scouts, Emily Schoeppner, Savanna Sparrow, Lexi Pfeifer, Ashley Moss, Isabella Perez, Sabine Schaefer, Neva Sanders, Audra Grabendike and Joanie Korroch, began this journey on February 16, 2013, when they helped set a Guinness World Record for packaging 479,034 meals in just 32 minutes for Haiti.

Next, on March 9, 2013, Father Daniel joined them for a lovely breakfast and great conversation. Throughout the day, they continued to cook “made from scratch” meals and desserts for the firemen and policemen that service our community in addition to fixing lunch for themselves.

They ended their 20 hour service project on Girl Scout Sunday, March 10th, as they read for Mass and served Hospitality to all parishioners in the Assembly Room following the 9 a.m. Mass.
